Lista de mai jos prezinta numele celor care au contribuit in mod major la design-ul diferitelor modele BMW. Datorita acestor oameni, BMW-urile au infatisarea pe care o stim.
Informatiile trebuie privite pur informativ si cu o oarecare marja de eroare. Aceasta pentru ca, la un model proiectat sub conducerea unui anumit sef al departamentului de deisgn, este foarte probabil ca numele acestui director sa fie mentionat in design-ul modelului respectiv, fara insa sa fi avut o contributie majora - de exemplu contributia lui Paul Bracq la E21, sau a lui Chris Bangle la E46. Dupa al doilea razboi mondial si pana in prezent BMW a avut foarte putini sefi ai departamentului de design, in ordine: Paul Bracq, Claus Luthe, Chris Bangle, Adrian Von Hooydonk. Se pare insa ca mai este si un al cincilea, dar nu am reusit sa aflu nici numele sau, nici unde se pozitioneaza cronologic. Daca intr-adevar a existat al cincilea, cel mai probabil l-a precedat pe Paul Bracq. Paul Bracq s-a nascut la 13 dec 1933 in Bordeaux, Franta. Intre 1957 si 1967 este director de design la Mercedes. Participa la proiectarea modelelor diferitelor modele Mercedes - poate cel mai spectaculos a fost 230 SL. Intre 1967 si 1970 se intoarce in Franta si participa la proiectarea TGV (trenul de mare viteza). Intre 1970 si 1974 este director de design la BMW. Participa la proiectarea Seriei 5 E12, Seriei 3 E21, Seriei 6 E24, 2002 Turbo, posibil si Seriei 7 E23. Paul Bracq considera insa ca cea mai mare realizare a sa in domeniul design-ului auto este prototipul BMW Turbo - design care a stat la baza modelelor de serie M1 E26 si Seria 8 E31. Din 1974 revine in Franta si participa la proiectarea interiorului modelelor Peugeot 305, 505, 205, 405, 106, 406 si 206. |

In 1976, Claus Luthe a fost numit director de design la BMW. Inainte de BMW, a lucrat pentru NSU.
In 1990, era deja de 14 ani la conducerea acestui departament, iar modelele BMW ale anilor '80 si '90 ii datoreaza in mare masura design-ul. Succesul profesional al lui Luthe, insa, a inceput sa fie umbrit de problemele personale. Fiul sau (ajuns deja la o vartsa adulta) era dependent de droguri, iar relatiile dintre cei doi erau foarte proaste. Intr-o seara, designer-ul in varsta de 59 de ani s-a certat cu fiul sau si intr-un exces de furie l-a injunghiat mortal. Luthe a fost arestat, judecat si intemnitat, dar datorita circumstantelor a beneficiat de o pedeapda redusa. Directorul de atunci al departamentului cercetare - dezvoltare, Wolfgang Ritzle, a cautat timp de doi ani un inlocuitor pentru Claus Luthe. Am aflat recent si numele celui de-al cincilea sef al departamentlui de design de la BMW. Intr-adevar, acesta l-a precedat pe Bracq, iar numele lui este Wilhelm Hofmeister (l-am gasit scris si "Hoffmeister", corect este insa cu un singur "f") Lui i se datoreaza "C"-ul din stalpul spate, un element de design distinctiv al BMW-urilor incepand cu anii '50. nu am nimic cu designul exterior al modelelor noi , exceptie facand spatele serie 7 si poate putin din 6 insa la interior.... nu-mi plac deloc, bordul ala drept.. ingust... linia panourilor de usi... mai au putin sa schimbe sigla si gata,, s-a dus dreaq marca

Acum, cred ca 90% din cei care il cumpara o fac pentru marca&fitze. OMG, am un BMW, uitati-va lume, sunt cel mai tare ! Putin probabil sa mai faca BMW masinile asa cum le faceau mai demult; acum o masina trebuia "sa prinda" la cat mai multa lume (cu bani), nu isi pot permite sa faca o masina "a driver's car", pentru ca daca ar face asa cu siguranta ar avea vanzari mai mici. Masina trebuie facuta in primul rand ca sa se vanda.
Cat despre design, noul model trebuie sa fie cat mai diferit fata de cel vechi tocmai pentru ca omul de rand sa faca diferenta intre el si cel vechi: altfel isi va spune "ce rost are sa cumpar noul model daca seamana cu cel vechi?" De exemplu, noul S-klasse mi se pare chiar urat, seamana cu un Ford Mondeo mai mare. Dar atata timp cat se vinde si face fata concurentilor A8 si serie 7, inseamna ca e bun. Tare chestia cu tunelul, nu stiam. Dar demult ma intrebam, "ma cum de i-a dus capul pe ei si si-au permis sa faca luneta aia cu forma aerodinamica? La E28 de ce nu au facut?" E vorba de colturile de jos care sunt saltate putin, sa curga aerul mai bine. E adevarat, e mai frumos E28-ul cum e, cu colturi, dar treaba aia la dacie m-a uimit.
